A Comparative Study of Chinese and English Overviews of Pharmaceutical Companies from the Perspective of Systemic Functional Grammar文献综述

一、选题的背景与意义

Multinational business is booming under the landscape of globalization; hence, a successful overview is of vital importance for a company during the communication and cooperation with foreign partners. It helps to show a fine corporate profile to prospective partners and customers, thereby improving the companyrsquo;s competitive edges. Effective and efficient publicity in foreign markets requires thorough consideration of local factors, and a wise way to do this is to draw lessons from foreign companies, that is, to analyze how they introduce themselves to their native partners and consumers.

The pharmaceutical industry is of no exception, yet it also boasts some unique features. Using Chinese and English overviews of pharmaceutical companies as a corpus to do such an analysis, therefore, can offer a detailed instruction to Chinese firms which aim to go global and foreign companies which want to develop business in China.

二、研究的主要内容与预期目标

The thesis will analyze and contrast the features of Chinese and English overviews of pharmaceutical companies in terms of the three meta-functions of Systemic Functional Grammar, so as to look into the emphases and inclinations of them, figure out how they respectively fulfill their functions in native market, and offer some suggestions about the composition of foreign-language overviews to firms engaged in multinational business, particularly in the pharmaceutical industry.

三、拟采用的研究方法

Research methods:

This thesis will use Chinese and English overviews of pharmaceutical companies at home and abroad as a corpus, and then apply the Systemic Functional Grammar to the analysis of the corpus from three aspects: ideational, textual, and interpersonal functions. Next it will find out the similarities and differences between the two kinds of overviews. Finally it will discuss the merits and demerits of foreign-language overviews, namely, the English overview of domestic pharmaceutical companies and the Chinese overview of foreign pharmaceutical firms, and put forward some possible suggestions.
